Valentine’s Day is the quintessential day of the year to show someone you love them. Whilst traditionally for those in romantic relationships it is an occasion to show someone you love them. However, love can come in many different forms and Valentine’s Day can be used as a demonstration of your love and appreciation for all the people you hold close.
Valentine’s Day is celebrated annually on the 14th of February. It is celebrated worldwide, though it is most popular in the USA, the UK, Canada, and Australia. Originating from the Pagan fertility festival of Lupercalia, Valentine’s Day began due to the banning of the Lupercalia by Pope Gelasius I, in favour of celebrating the martyrdom of Saint Valentine. Over time, the day became synonymous with the celebration of love and relationships. In the modern day, Valentine’s Day is celebrated by many couples, married or otherwise. Gift giving and Valentine’s Day cards are staples of the holiday, with approximately 19 million Valentine’s Day cards being bought in the UK in 2021 alone. Did you know?: Saint Valentine, whilst also being the saint of love and marriages, is also the saint of beekeepers, epilepsy and the plague!
